Biography
Joan Hickson OBE is Notable.
Joan Bogle Hickson, OBE was an English actress of theatre, film and television. She was known for her role as Agatha Christie's Miss Marple in the television series Miss Marple.
Joan was born on 5 August 1906 at 26 Cranford Terrace, Northampton. She was the only child of Edith Mary Bogle and Alfred Harold Hickson, a shoe manufacturer.[1][2] Joan boarded at Oldfield School in the seaside town of Swanage in Dorset. She later trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in the Bloomsbury area of London.
On 29 October 1932 at Hampstead Parish Church, Hampstead, North West London, Hickson married physician Dr Eric Norman Butler (born 2 September 1902 in Westbury, Wiltshire). They had two children. Dr Norman died in June 1967 in Colchester, Essex.
Peter Haining writes that Hickson appeared in an Agatha Christie play, Appointment with Death in London's West End. Christie saw a performance in 1946, and wrote in a note to her, "I hope one day you will play my dear Miss Marple".[3] Hickson appeared in over 100 films for the cinema. She did play the role of Miss Marple in all 12 adaptations of the novels produced by the BBC from 1984 to 1992. She received two BAFTA nominations for Best TV Actress in 1987 and 1988, and was the oldest actress to lead a major television series, having begun the series at age 78. The series ended when Hickson insisted on retiring from the role at the age of 86 while the programme was still at the peak of its popularity.[4]
She lived as Jane Butler in Rose Lane, Wivenhoe, along the River Colne 43 miles from London in Essex, from 1958 until her death in 1998.[5]
Hickson died of a stroke in Colchester General Hospital on 17 October 1998.[6] She was buried as Joan Bogle Butler at Saint Giles Churchyard, Sidbury, Devon.[7]
